What is a domain name?
A domain name is an Internet address
(example http://www.register.com): it is similar to a customized license plate or a permanent phone number or address. A domain name also allows you to receive e-mail at a customized e-mail address. If your organization's name is ACME, Inc., you could register the domain name ACME.COM and your e-mail address could be yourname@acme.com.

Your customers would also be able to access your organization's Web site by visiting "www.acme.com" with their Web browser. These are just a few of the most common uses for a domain name.

What is a URL?
The term URL means Uniform Resource Locator. This is the string of information that lets people locate specific sites on the Internet. A URL is unique -- meaning that no two are exactly alike. It is a description of a computer's location on the Internet much like your home address describes your location within a city. An example of a URL is http://www.creativepieces.com

Top of the page

What are the rules for creating a domain name?
A domain name can be up to 26 characters long -- including the characters used to identify the Top Level Domain (.NET, .COM, .ORG, .CC, etc.). Domain names are not case sensitive.

When entering the Domain Name you want, do not include "www" or "http." You should, however, put .com, .org, .net, or .cc at the end of the Domain Name.

If your first choice is not available, consider looking up the same name with a slight variation, or a different ending.

Example: yourname.com is not available?
Try yourname.cc

Letters, numbers and dashes (if they do not begin or end the name) are all valid.

The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers and a hyphen "-". Other special characters like the underscore "_" or an exclamation mark "!" are NOT permitted.

Top of the page

Do I have to use .com?
No. In addition to the TLD “.com” you can also choose:

“.org” -- to be used by not-for-profit organizations
“.net” -- to be used by companies involved in Internet infrastructure
".cc" -- Cocos Islands to be used by all enterprises
".co.uk" -- UK TLD used for both commercial and personal sites.
".org.uk" -- UK TLD used for both commercial and personal sites.
".tv" -- Tuvalu to be use for commercial sites and by video content providers.

There are so many new ones today that are at good prices.

Can I register a .web, .firm or .shop address with register.com?
.firm, .shop, .web, .arts, .rec, .info and .nom domains are listed under a proposed domain list by the Council of Registrars (CORE). These domains have not yet been approved and are not yet available to be registered. When the domains are approved, register.com plans to offer these domains to our customers. Please continue to check back with register.com periodically and keep up to date with our new services.

Top of the page

What if the name I want to use is already taken?
It means that someone on the Internet has already secured that name for his or her own site, and that name is probably gone. You may try a slight variation on that name or think up a new one, or visit us again to check again for another name.

What should I do if I am planning to start an organization in the future but I want to reserve a domain name now?
If you are planning on starting an organization or company but do not have an official name established yet, simply enter your name in the Organization field. Once you have established your organization you can change your organization name and information through an online form. Please visit: http://internic.net/reg-change/agreement.html to access the online form. With online form you can:
  1. Correct a misspelling in the Registrant's name (e.g., typographical errors or transpositions)
  2. Correct an organizational identifier (e.g., Inc., Co., Corp., L.L.C., L.L.P., SA, AG),
  3. Change the Registrant's legal name in our database, or
  4. Transfer the domain name to another party.

How long should the registration process take?
The process of registering a domain name is increasingly coordinated through an automated process called an "auto-parser." Once you have submitted a complete and correctly formatted Agreement, your registration request will be processed immediately and you will be notified via e-mail when processing is complete. This generally takes less than 24 hours - with some requests turned around in as little as 10 minutes. The time of the last update to the Whois database will be noted on the search results page.

Following the registration, updates to the root name servers are propagated Monday through Friday, at which time the DNS information for the newly registered name becomes visible to the DNS system. Domain names processed prior to 6 p.m. Eastern Time Monday through Friday should be accessible on the Internet on the next day; names processed on Saturdays and Sundays should be accessible on the following Tuesday.

Enic updates their files twice a day to ensure that .cc DNS changes or new domains are up and running within 12 hours.

Once a domain is registered, who "owns" the domain name?
If you register and pay for the domain name, you own that name. The domain name holder is the person or organization listed at the top of the WHOIS record. The WHOIS record is the report of the internet database. The administrative, technical and billing contacts are individuals who your organization assigns and trusts to handle issues involving the domain name record.

In many cases, the technical contact is a representative of the Internet service provider and the administrative contact is a representative of the domain name holder. In fact, this is the model the Internic/Network Solutions recommends.

But regardless of who is the listed administrative and technical contact, the domain name holder is the organization who is listed on item 3a of the Domain Name Registration Agreement http://www.internic.net/help/newreg.html.

It is important to note that the organization name cannot be modified or changed. If a domain is being transferred to another organization, it must be deleted and re-registered as a new domain.

Top of the page

Where will my domain name reside, as soon as it is registered?
Your domain name will be held at a nameserver, however, it will point to one web page until you choose a hosting service. Specifically, your domain will point to http://futuresite.register.com, a web page place holder, until you decide on a hosting service. Once you have found a hosting service, that company will be able to transfer the domain name to your virtual server. If you need an inexpensive hosting solution, please go to http://www13.siteamerica.com/signup/hosting_promo.html.

What is .tv?
Register.com has recently partnered with the .TV Corporation in Canada to offer .TV domains. The .TV domain is the TLD assigned to Tuvalu, a small island nation located in the southwest Pacific Ocean. TV is an international symbol that clearly identifies television. It is commonly believed that all television content will be broadcast over the Internet in the next few years. Internet savvy companies will utilize the power of .TV brands to drive consumers to their content. The fee, payable to the .TV Corporation, is anywhere from $50 - $1,000's depends on the popularity of the name, so say a common name might be 1,000 where if you made a name or wanted abcdefg.tv you would pay the least most likely.

I do not understand the response I received.
You should receive one of several responses from the application process:
  1. A hostmaster response indicating receipt of the Domain Name Registration Agreement and providing the associated tracking number. Make a note of this number! When submitting questions related to the application, referencing the tracking number in the e-mail will significantly speed up the response.

  2. A Domain Registration (domreg) response indicating the registration is complete and will be propagated with the next root server update.

  3. A Domain Registration (domreg) error message indicating the Domain Name Registration Agreement has a problem. The message will refer to an error within a particular field and references a document detailing the errors.

Top of the page

I never received any response to my submission.
The Internic/Network Solutions's auto responder will automatically send back a response to the sender if:

1.It is sent to one of the role accounts (hostmaster, domreg, asnreg, netreg, inaddr, reassign, invoice, question, transfer, rereg).

Note: This means that the SMTP header needs to list the above listed account either in the "To:" or "Apparently-to:" headers.

2.It does not have a precedence of "bulk."

3.The sender has a correctly formed email address in either the "Reply-to:" or "From:" header.

The response can be delayed (up to three days) based on local system load levels, transience across the net, or delivery problems at your local site. More than likely, a delay indicates an e-mail routing issue. Typically, a hostmaster response should be received, if not within minutes, certainly within a day. Please contact your service provider and assure the e-mail address used for the submission is valid.

Modifications: resubmit the Domain Name Registration Agreement.

  2. Go to the top of your screen and select the Edit/Copy selection

  4. Place your cursor in the empty field
  5. Return to the top of your screen and select the Edit/Paste selection
  6. Press return/enter and submit your registration request.

Top of the page

Why do I receive an error message when I try to confirm my registration?
If you receive an error message when you confirm your registration there are two possible explanations.
  1. You have already registered the same domain and your registration details were already sent to the registry. You only need to confirm your registration once!
  2. Another possibility is a mistake occurred during the confirmation process. It is extremely important to check your email and then copy and paste the entire confirmation link into your browser. If you copy and paste this link into your browser for the first time and receive an error message please contact us at hostmaster@register.com

How do I determine the status of my domain name?
The registration of a new domain name is typically processed within 24 hours. Upon completion of the domain name registration, the requester and technical contact for the primary name server will receive notification from Network Solutions. The new domain name record will show up in the publicly-accessible Whois database within 24 hours after the Agreement has been processed.

Go to the Whois database which is part of Network Solutions and allows you to find email addresses, postal addresses and telephone numbers of those who have registered domain names with InterNic. Type in the domain name you registered. If processing is complete, your query will return your domain name record. If you receive the message: No match for ... , you should check the next day. The Whois database is usually updated daily by 6:00 a.m. EST and includes registrations and modifications processed before 2 a.m. The time of the last update will be noted on the search results page.

It is possible that your domain name will be visible in the Whois database before your name is visible on the Internet. This is because, for your domain name to be visible on the Internet, information about your domain name has to be added to the Internet's zone files, a global databases of information about domain names that is updated on a different schedule than the Whois database. Domain names processed prior to 6 p.m. EST Monday through Friday should be visible on the Internet on the next day; names processed on Saturdays and Sundays should be visible on the following Tuesday.

If your domain name is in the Whois database (not on HOLD) and the information added to the zone files, you should contact your Internet Service Provider if you are still experiencing problems reaching the domain.

You may also use the Whois database to check to see if a modification has been completed.

If you have further questions about your registration status (.com, .net, .org), please send email to hostmaster@Internic/Network Solutions.net. (include your domain name and tracking number in the email). The Registration Help Line at (703) 742-4777 will also be able to provide status information.

For further questions regarding your registration status for names registered under the .cc domain, please send email to hostmaster@nic.cc and include your domain name in the email.

For information regarding names registered under the .co.uk domain, please email billing@netnamin.co.uk or call Compusolve at 44 (0) 1222-310287

Why are some domain names "On Hold"?

a) payment for the domain is not current,

b) the domain name is involved in a trademark dispute, or

c) pending server activation.

Cost - What is the charge for domain name?

Web Site Source can beat many prices, mention us(CreativePieces.com). You can get a Domain name at a great price today. The average cost for registering a new domain name in .com, .org, and .net is $70 (US).(but our hosting company can do better) This fee covers the initial registration and updates to the domain name's database record for a period of two years. Following the initial two-year period, registrants will be charged $35 (US) annually, on the anniversary of the initial registration, to renew the domain name. The renewal fee also covers updates for that year. The billing contact will be sent an invoice by postal and electronic mail 30 days before this fee is due.

Updates that are not covered by this fee are: changes to the domain name itself; transfers of the domain name to another party; changes in the Organization's information that in effect represent a transfer of the domain name to another legal entity. These actions are not considered updates and require a new registration to be processed, which will be subject to the $70 (US) new registration fee.

Those domains already in existence when fees were imposed will owe a $35 annual renewal fee on the anniversary date of their registration. The billing contact will be sent an invoice by postal and electronic mail 30 days before this fee is due.

Other TLD's charge different rates. For example, the cost for registering .cc is $100(US) for 2 years and registering .co.uk is £94 / 2 years or £79 / 2 years by credit card. For a full list of pricing, please see the home page.

Top of the page

How do I pay to register my domain name?
You can pay the Internic/Network Solutions fees by credit card, check or money order. All charges are payable in US funds only, and they will bill you directly. Other TLDs use different payment method but it's standard to pay by check or credit card.

Top of the page

Are the Internic/Network Solutions or other registry fees refundable?
No.

Top of the page

What happens if I don't pay?
Under normal conditions, if payment is not received by the due date, the domain name is subject to deactivation and deletion. So if you accidentally register a domain name you don't want, ignore the bill you are sent or emailed and you will not be responsible for the fees.

In addition, when you register more than 10 domain names in any 30-day period and/or when there is a record of bad credit risk, the Registrar reserves the right to apply different procedures.

Top of the page

What are the billing and payment procedures for a new domain name?
Under normal conditions, within 7 days after name activation, an invoice is sent to the billing contact by postal and electronic mail. Payment is due within 30 days. If payment is not received by the due date, the domain name is subject to deactivation and deletion.

Note - this invoicing procedure applies only to names registered under the .com, .net and .org domains. If you are registering names under the .cc and .co.uk domains, Enic or Nominet will email you with billing and payment procedures.

Top of the page

What are the billing and payment procedures for renewing my domain name?
30 days before the annual renewal fee is due, an invoice is sent to the billing contact by postal and electronic mail. Payment is due within 30 days. If payment is not received by the due date (anniversary date), the domain name is subject to deactivation and deletion.

When more than 10 names are registered in any 30-day period and/or when there is a record of bad credit risk, the Registrar reserves the right to apply different procedures.

Top of the page
What is the .TV Domain?
The .TV domain is a top-level domain (TLD) which works just like other Internet domains such as .COM, .NET, and .ORG. People can now submit Requests to register domain names such as WWW.SPORTS.TV, WWW.NEWS.TV, and WWW.MYBRAND.TV.

Top of the page

How do plans to create new TLD’s affect .TV?
The .TV domain is not part of the plan to create new TLD's, such as .INFO, .REC and .NOM. The .TV TLD is a stable and established domain that will remain completely unaffected by any additions or changes to the Domain Name System.

Top of the page

Why is this a great opportunity?
If you are marketing video content over the Internet, .TV is an invaluable asset. There is tremendous potential to create new brands and extend existing brands on the Internet.

Top of the page

Can't I provide television content through my .COM site?
Yes, but advertising your .COM domain will not tell users that your site features television content. Your .TV domain will do this immediately. Here at creative Pieces we can help you put up Digital Video.

Top of the page

Why is it so expensive?
Domain names have become valuable commodities. The .TV domain has great intrinsic value to video content providers. The pricing model has been developed to enhance this intrinsic value by attracting high-quality content providers while discouraging domain name speculators.

In addition, your .TV registration will include online tools to index content within your domain.
